Amie Cota (born, Amy LaCour) is a composer, researcher, vocalist who places African American poetry in a chamber music setting to tell the stories of Black American lives, histories, and journeys. Cota’s work is guided by her interest in the myriad ways history informs our present and the present, in turn, reshapes our understanding of history. Her music is primarily influenced by folk, jazz, and soul traditions.
Cota’s most recent work has been presented at the Oakland Museum of California, the California African American Museum (CAAM), Los Angeles’ LAX Festival, and San Francisco’s SOMArts Cultural Center. She has also had the privilege of working in small, community performance spaces presenting and promoting concerts on behalf of fellow musicians and artists. This has been some of the most rewarding work of her career.
